7 Things to do in Toronto for New Year’s Eve 2017

There’s no shortage of events to choose from in Toronto and the Mississauga area to ring in the New Year. Whether you live in the GTA, or are a short term visitor to the Mississauga area, you’ll have no problem finding, and participating, in memorable New Year’s Eve celebrations.

As Mississauga’s choice for short term rental solutions, our City Gate Suites local experts keep their finger on the pulse of what’s happening in the community. So we asked them, what are 7 noteworthy things to do in Toronto and Mississauga for New Year’s Eve 2017?

  1. Nathan Phillips Square
  2. Downtown Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square is legendary for its New Year’s Eve celebration. Take the family during the day for crafts, vendors, activities and outdoor skating. Bundle up and stay for the evening where the New Year kicks off in Canada’s largest city with live music and a huge fireworks display.

  3. Celebration Square Mississauga
  4. Celebration Square in Mississauga is aptly named, especially around New Years! 2017’s program of events includes high energy live performances and entertainment, food trucks and, of course, fireworks to welcome 2018 at midnight.

  5. New Year’s Eve Comedy Extravaganza, Massey Hall
  6. Massey Hall wants you to “laugh in” the New Year, hosting the 17th annual Comedy Extravaganza. See an award-winning cast of 9 different comics take the stage, and start the New Year off with a smile on your face.

  7. Escape Rooms
  8. If you’re looking for an out of the ordinary activity for the whole family to enjoy, Escape Rooms are a fantastic option. Celebrate the New Year by “escaping” the old. There are Escape Rooms across Toronto and Mississauga, many of which are open New Year’s Eve.

  9. The ROM
  10. #ROMNYE invites you to dance the night away with live bands, DJs and a toast at midnight. The night includes exclusive access to special collections, appetizers and drinks. The setting couldn’t be more unique – mingle with your friends alongside dinosaurs and rare world artifacts!

  11. Club Crawl
  12. Every year, thousands gather for a “crawl” of club venues across the city of Toronto. Say farewell to 2017 with music and dance at three of the city’s premiere downtown venues. At midnight, confetti and balloons will drop as the the clock runs out on 2017.

  13. Midnight Run & Party
  14. If you’re looking for something a bit more active to participate in, you can join fellow runners for a 5km run at the stroke of midnight, and start 2018 with a post race party. Participants will receive a swag bag, and a glass of beer or champagne.

Those are just a few of the many options for New Year’s Eve in and around the city of Toronto and Mississauga. Choose an event that fits you and your family’s pace and lifestyle. Above all, have a safe and very happy New Year.

Why Choose Short Term Rentals for Medical Stays

Receiving medical treatment is a difficult and scary task in and of itself, but having to relocate to get your treatment makes it even harder. The last thing you want to do is have to leave the comfort of your own home when faced with this situation. Sometimes relocating is unavoidable, in order to receive the best medical care you can get.

Short term rentals for medical stays can help ease the strain of relocating for medical care. With short term rentals, guest can enjoy almost all the same comforts of home. At City Gate Suites, we like to think of our medical housing as a home away from home. Short term rentals come fully furnished, and equipped with a full kitchen, washer and dryer, bedding, and television. Eat dinner without having to order delivery, wash your laundry without going to the laundromat, and relax in front of the television as if you were at your own home. City Gate Suites will even allow you to bring along your pet, if you have one, to comfort you during your stay.

Choose short term rentals over hotels for your medical stay. Not only do hotels not provide the same features and amenities that short term rentals offer, but they do so at a higher price. Most often, rates for short term rentals are much more favourable than hotels, as hotels expect shorter stays. When planning a stay of a few weeks to a few months, short term rentals tend to be more affordable.

If you are travelling to Mississauga for medical stay, there are some highly acclaimed hospitals in the area. All of City Gate Suites’ buildings are within a short drive from each of the three excellent hospitals. To learn more about the hospitals in and around Mississauga, click here.

What To Consider When Looking For A Pet-Friendly Short Term Rental

There are some periods in our lives when relocation is required. It may either be temporary, such as needing a place to live during an intense part of a home renovation. In other cases, it may be permanent, like a job transfer to a new part of the province or country, where you need to find an immediate housing solution to live and work while at the same time eventually looking for a new home.

Of course, uprooting your life like this, especially when it was pretty well established, can leave you with some big concerns. One of the biggest, if you have pets, is finding pet-friendly accommodations. While people who don’t own pets may not “get it,” anyone with a beloved pet knows that this is a part of the family, and cutting off that bond is harmful and stressful for the owner and the pet.

If you’re looking for pet-friendly short-term rentals while you’re relocating yourself, you need to keep a few things in mind as you search.

Take More Time For Your Search

Obviously, the number of pet-friendly accommodations is going to be smaller than the number of temporary housing solutions available strictly to people. Take this into account when you begin your search. While you may easily find housing solutions in the areas you need to relocate to, finding ones that meet your pet requirements may need more time. Build this factor into your search time to avoid being cornered into last minute solutions.

Watch Out For Breed Restrictions

Like people, all dogs are not created alike, and there are big biological and behavioural differences from one breed to another. Some pet-friendly short-term rentals may take these breed characteristics into account. So while one housing solution may actually be open to smaller breeds like Corgis, for example, they may not feel comfortable with accommodating the needs of a much bigger, more athletic dog such as a Doberman Pinscher, which require much more room to move and may have more aggression issues.

Check carefully with any potential rental to see, if they do allow dogs, whether there are breed restrictions that you need to be aware of. For some people, this may be a deal breaker, and you need to know this before you sign and commit to anything.

Keep Exercise Needs In Mind

Cat owners have far less trouble in this respect, since most of the time they keep their pets indoors, and don’t even need to take them out for toilet activities since the litter box is all they use. For bigger dogs, however, like German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Greyhounds, and other breeds, access to good outdoor areas for exercise is an absolute must for responsible pet owners.

All dogs will need to be taken out for toilet activities, but big dogs, in particular, will need to have a large area in which to exercise. If you’re the type of owner that also wants to be able to let your dog run off leash, make sure there’s an area nearby that legally accommodates this.
We’ve Got What You’re Looking For

If you’ve got a pet, and you don’t know where to start looking for your pet-friendly accommodations, don’t worry; we do. City Gate Suites has temporary housing for a variety of situations, including people with pets! Contact us today for more information.

Everything you need to know about the Toronto Christmas Market

I know it’s still only the beginning of November, but it’s time to start getting into the holiday spirit. The holidays are approaching fast and furious! Toronto’s Distillery District will be hosting their annual Christmas Market, and you do not want to miss out this year. The market opens on November 16th, and runs Tuesday through Sunday up until December 23rd.

This magical month long event celebrates all that Christmas has to offer, the sights, the smells and the sounds. Here you will find local musicians, carollers, artisan food, and festive crafts. The gorgeous cobblestone streets of the historic Distillery District will help to set the mood.

Beer Gardens

During the cold winter season, you are going to want to keep warm at the Christmas Market. Grab a beer, wine or European cocktail at the beer gardens and stay warm next to one of their heated lounges and bonfires.

Photo Ops

If you’re looking for some scenic places to take some photos for your Instagram account or this year’s Christmas cards, the Christmas Market has plenty. The popular giant red “Heart of Christmas” will be decorated with mistletoe, Santa Claus will be posing for photos, and there will be a new large “Joy” sign, and Christmas tree, both of which will be lit up brightly.

Light Tunnel

This year for the first time, the Christmas Market will feature a 100-foot long tunnel, lit up by thousands of tiny Christmas lights. This beautiful attraction was inspired by the Christmas market that takes place in Bern, Switzerland. The Swiss market’s light tunnel boasts a cheese fondue option, as will the Toronto market.

Short Term Rentals Vs. Airbnb

There is no denying that Airbnb’s are convenient and have been exponentially growing in popularity in recent years, but let’s not forget about short term rentals. There are several differences between short term rentals and Airbnb that are worth considering for your next trip.

1. Length of Stay

The average length of stay for an Airbnb customer is approximately 6 days, versus an average of 1 to 2 months for short term rental customers. For people travelling for longer than a week, Airbnb tends to become rather expensive. On the other hand, short term rental providers often offer discounts for customers that stay for extended periods of time.

2. Type of Accommodation

Airbnb’s are typically popular for people looking for a variety of living options, from apartments, to detached homes, boats, or RV’s. Short term rentals are most often located in condominiums, and give you access to a host of amenities offered in the building, such as a swimming pool, sauna, gym, business centre, and more.

3. Amenities

Not only do short term rental providers give their customers access to the amenities offered by the building, but they also maintain beautifully furnished suites. Short term rental suites always come fully equipped with bedding, linens, and toiletries to offer you the same comfort you feel at your own home. Because Airbnb suites are managed by the owner of the property, sometimes you will come across owners that won’t provide such amenities to their guests.

4. Property Management

In short term housing, all requests are managed through a head office so providers are able to maintain a uniform approach to bookings and customer service. Suites are managed in a professional manner, and specific processes are put in place to ensure customers have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Airbnb hosts manage their own properties, leaving a lot of room for error. There are limited processes put into place to standardize the care of the guests or the cleanliness of the suite during the duration of the stay.

At City Gate Suites, we put your care first so that you feel at home while you stay with us! Our affordable price and beautifully furnished suites will put you at ease during the stressful travelling process.

If you’re not yet convinced that short term rentals are the best move for you, then give us a call at 1-800-954-9188 and we’ll tell you why they should be!

Where to Enjoy the Fall Colours in Mississauga

Fall is arguably one of the most beautiful seasons in Mississauga. Yes, we are sad that summer has come to an end, but it is time to embrace all the wonderful things that the fall season has to offer us. Sweater weather, pumpkin spice lattes, and thanksgiving are among us! But best of all, the leaves are changing falls and it is quite the sight to see!

Your commute to work or school will be that much more enjoyable, and long drives up north won’t seem like a drag. There are so many places that you can go to take in the beauty, but we’ve put together this list of three of the top places to enjoy the fall foliage in Mississauga.

Jack Darling Memorial Park

This park is a beautiful space to stroll through all year round, but once the leaves start to change colour it is magnificent. The park is surrounded by hundreds of trees and is located right on the shore of Lake Ontario, so you can enjoy a peaceful and scenic stroll down the waterfront. It is truly a unique scenery.

Kariya Park

This Japanese inspired park is gorgeous once the leaves start to change colour. It is centred right in the heart of downtown Mississauga and is a hot spot for the residents of the city. The quant park has a stream running through it, Japanese statues, and beautiful backgrounds for taking photos.

Erindale Park

This park is the largest in Mississauga. Here you’ll find trails that are perfect for hiking or leasurely walking. These trails run along the Credit River and are encompassed by trees, boasting outstanding views of the foliage changing colours.

The Best Health and Fitness Apps

The App Store and the Google Play store can be somewhat overwhelming with the influx of apps being introduced in recent years. There are over 2 million apps available for download, so navigating amongst them can be difficult.

If you’re a fitness fanatic or just looking to get more in shape, there are plenty of apps that can help you stay on track. From calorie counters to workout apps, everything you need can be found in your phone’s store.

We’ve searched through the store to find the apps that we believe to be the best for monitoring your health and fitness.

My Fitness Pal Calorie Counter and Diet Tracker

This calorie counting app lets you input all the food you eat throughout the day, calculating all the number of calories you’ve consumed. You can then input your daily exercise, and the app will subtract your calories burned during your workout from the calories you’ve consumed through food. This will open your eyes to the calories deficit or surplus that you have at the end of your day. My Fitness Pal holds you accountable for the food you’re eating and puts you on the right track to a healthy diet.

Nike+ Training Club

This Nike app is perfect for those of you that need some guidance during your workouts. Nike lets you choose from 15, 30 and 45 minute long workouts, which you can choose based on your skill level and desired type of exercise. The best part is that the app gives you how-to videos, demonstrating how to complete each exercise.

Sleepbot

Getting a good sleep is vital to a healthy lifestyle, so using a sleep tracker to make sure that you’re getting a lot of z’s is important. Sleepbot uses your phone to track how long it takes you to fall asleep, how restless you are and how many hours you’re sleeping for. A cool feature this app has, is the alarm that goes off when you’re in your lightest sleep cycle.

10% Happier

Meditation is important for a healthy mind and for positive mental health. This meditation app gives you access to courses and videos that teach you how to meditate. 10% Happier makes meditation easy with coaching from real humans, not bots!
